Hemodiafiltration (HDF) and Expanded Hemodialysis (HDx)

In 2026, two new-to-the-US modalities were rolled out to patients in the two largest dialysis organizations.

The first is hemodiafiltration (HDF). HDF uses a specialized dialysis system and replacment fluid to deliver treatment to patients. Expanded hemodialysis (HDx) uses a special dialyzer that can be fitted to a conventional dialysis machine. Both have shown improved clearance and better outcomes for patients so far. This does not mean that either treatment is better for every patient. It is important to talk to your healthcare team about what is right for you. The Forum's Kidney Patient Advisory Council (KPAC) has developed a poster to help patients navigate this new landscape. Download the poster and share with patients.
